Teso Safe Motherhood Project — Phase One Reorganization

Teso Safe Motherhood clinic (TSM) started as a primary health clinic for people displaced by the Ugandan civil war. As the war ended, the camps were closed and people dispersed. The need for health care, especially for safe maternity care for this vulnerable and traumatized population remained. The four nurses who cofounded the clinic with Ugandan partners accepted the request for collaboration from a US midwife. Her nonprofit organization eventually took over the funding as TSM evolved into a maternity center. From a $25,000 budget and 4 staff, TSM evolved to a thriving maternity center where the 45 staff and budget of $500,000 provided safe maternity care for 100-150 deliveries monthly. Unfortunately, the funder precipitously severed her funding on September 18, 2023.

The clinic Administrator, Martin Oteger (who was the first person who assisted the four founding nurses in 2005), has worked tirelessly to forge new partnerships and bring a team of dedicated former employee/clinicians to continue the mission of TSM. TSM Reopening Phase One began January 8 and goes through April 30, 2024. MFP granted $1,995 to this effort, and continues to fiscally sponsor the TSM Phase One Reorganization project through December 31, 2024.
